Smallmouth bass fishing Lake Erie

Smallmouth bass fishing in 2016 is expected to be fair but improving. Smallmouth bass catch rates decreased in 2015, when compared to 2014, but are still the highest observed since the mid-1990s. Smallmouth bass should be an excellent size (14 to 22 inches and weighing up to six pounds). The best fishing for smallmouth bass will continue to be in areas with good bottom structure, which is the available habitat across much of the entire Ohio nearshore and islands. Continuing the trend from previous years, largemouth bass fishing should be excellent in 2016. This emerging fishery is producing high catch rates and some large fish in nearshore areas and harbors across Ohio’s Lake Erie. All black bass (smallmouth and largemouth) must be immediately released from May 1 through June 24. Beginning June 25, the daily bag limit for bass will be five, with a 14-inch minimum length limit.

Black Hawk Lake

Water level is 9 inches over the crest of the spillway. Anglers have had luck catching bluegill and crappie in Town Bay and near the inlet bridge. Walleye are being picked up in Town Bay and along the shoreline around Ice House Point. This time of year you can expect good walleye fishing near shore as water temperatures continue to climb and walleye exhibit spawning behavior. Try areas near shore that contain sandy or gravel substrate.

Lake Erie

Spring walleye fishing is, of course, best around the reefs and in the rivers because that’s where they go to spawn. Popular places to catch spring walleyes are in about 10 feet of water over rocky areas. That’s where you will find boaters dragging hair jigs, perhaps tipped with a shiner and having good results.
The current bag limit is four walleyes until May 1. The state wildlife agency will soon announce new bag limits for May 1 and after. For the past several years that has been six through the last day of February. The limit will likely remain six and four during the spawning months of March and April.
While Lake Erie is called the “walleye capital of the world,” it’s also the best place to catch yellow perch. The bag limit is 30 and is likely to stay that way.

Ft. Loudoun/Tellico

Full pool 813 feet. Lake level is at 809½ feet, up several inches from last week. Water temperatures are in the upper 50s and low 60s. Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass: Good. Jigs, swim baits, spinner baits and medium running crank baits are finding fish close to cover. Crappie: Improving. Fish range from 6-20 feet deep.1 /8 ounce, white lead-head jigs tipped with minnows are popular. Brush piles and areas under houseboats and marinas are holding fish.

Lake Erie walleye

The Lake Erie walleye population is very solid and the numbers of catchable fish will be on the upswing this summer after a very good hatch in 2015.
A vibrant walleye population is certainly needed in the Walleye Capital of the World. Sport fishermen keep expanding the walleye season and continuously developing new and different ways to catch the delectable fish.
"It's really amazing to see some of the new techniques, especially when you're chasing cold-water walleye as they are right now on Western Lake Erie,"  The colorful spinner blades are popular with fishermen who troll to connect with their walleye, a major reversal after a generation of drift-and-cast fishing.Trophy walleye have been splashed all over social media this month as double-digit females feed voraciously before spawning on Lake Erie's limestone reefs.

Little Rock area

The greater Little Rock area is brimming with waters where you can sit under a shade tree, on a pier or in a boat to enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, bluegills, catfish, crappie, hybrid stripers and, in some locations, rainbow trout. Several metropolitan-area parks have stocked ponds or Arkansas River access, including War Memorial, MacArthur, Ottenheimer, Hindman, Boyle, Otter Creek, Burns, Kiwanis, Murray, Riverfront and Cook’s Landing. Head toward Jacksonville on U.S. 67/167 to wet a line at the Cabot Community Pond, Cherrywood Lake, Paradise Lake and Lake Pickthorne. Off Arkansas 10 to the west, you’ll find good fishing in the Arkansas River at Maumelle Park, the Environmental Education Pond in Pinnacle Mountain State Park and beautiful Lake Maumelle. Benton’s Sunset Lake, off Interstate 30’s exit 116, sports a handicapped-accessible fishing pier and a walking trail providing bank-fishing access around the entire lake.

JAMES RIVER

HIGHLIGHT: Good numbers of 8- to 12-inch smallmouth can be expected this year, and the fishing should get even better the next three to five years, thanks to a highly prolific spawn in 2014.
BEST SPOT: Upper section from Botetourt County to Lynchburg and midsection between Bremo and Bent Creek.
OTHER SPECIES: Flathead and channel catfish are abundant from Lynchburg to Richmond.
TIP: Target the least fished areas located between long stretches of public access.
